Volunteer Programs

VACI Ghana offers a variety of volunteering opportunities to international volunteers, including teaching, counseling, and orphanage work. Placement programs are flexible with a lot of extracurricular activities.

Besides allowing VACI participants to work on our existing project ideas or on projects of their own proposal, VACI also places participants in already existing volunteer positions through our partnerships with local schools, hospitals, libraries, and NGOs. This is a good volunteer option for those participants who do not have enough time and energy to commit to one of the VACI proposed long-term projects.

Participants don’t need to have earlier work experience or education in a specific field but if noted, previous knowledge or interest will be used as a means of placement. This will widen the positive experience of Ghana for the volunteer and it will also give the working places a more motivated volunteer. Currently, VACI offers work placement in the following areas

The Healthcare facilities in Ghana are not very widespread and due to extreme poverty many people are still unable to avail of the basic medical facilities.

Volunteers in the Healthcare Program work along with doctors, nurses and local staff in hospitals and community clinics in different locations across Ghana. Volunteer tasks are determined depending on the volunteer’s qualifications, experience and knowledge. Qualified doctors and nurses can carry full day to day treatment of various diseases. Medical students and Pre med students can assist the doctors and nurses in their work and observe their work to gain knowledge and experience. Qualified medical volunteers work in the areas of maternal health, mental health, surgery, laboratories, counselling and testing.

This program is particularly suited for those volunteers who are interested in health issues and doing ‘hands on’ clinical work. Volunteers work for around 6 hrs in a day for 5 days in a week. Volunteers schedule is flexible and can vary depending on the needs of the placement.

Volunteers are needed to work with children with intellectual disabilities at Chicago Junior School, a public school in Denu.

Please Note: –

Ghanaians are extremely passionate about all types of sports and their love for games is evident everywhere. You can see people wearing the Ghana Team jerseys and the cars on the road sport team stickers and flags.
VACI-Ghana places volunteers in this program in local schools and local sports clubs in Denu in the Volta Region of Ghana.

Volunteers can also help the students in local schools to improve their games and organize Football, Volley Ball, Net Ball, Basketball, Tennis matches. Volunteer Sports Coaching Program Description

Program Requirements

Volunteers must be 17 years or older at the beginning of the program. You need not have prior coaching experience but an interest in the game and playing experience is a must. Volunteers are strongly encouraged to bring materials with them that can assist in the implementation of this project (sports equipment, sports guides, videos, etc). Project Location Volunteer projects are located in and around Denu, Aflao, Dzodze.

Volunteers are placed in urban and rural communities in and around the project locations where they can teach English as well as other subjects to the local children. As a volunteer you will be teaching English and subjects such as Mathematics, Geography and General Knowledge to the children. The knowledge, skills and ideas that volunteers from other cultures can bring to a Ghanaian student is invaluable for the students.

Teaching Project volunteers mainly teach to local children in village schools. Although English is the official language of Ghana, the children rarely get to learn from non-Ghanaian speakers of the language.

Volunteers do NOT have to be native speakers of English but willing to volunteer in a village to help children who are ready to learn. Volunteers will receive assistance from the local VACI- Ghana coordinators and the local school regarding the lesson plans and teaching curriculum.
You could well find yourself teaching groups of children in an ‘open-air classroom’ where there are no chalkboards and the children have no books or pencils. The need for improvisation & creativity in teaching methods is paramount and can challenge the most experienced teacher, but the rewards are amazing.

Volunteers work for around 5 hrs a day for 5 days a week. Volunteers can bring along teaching materials such as picture books, instruments, flash cards, art supplies, and songs. Classes are generally in session five days a week.

Volunteer Teaching Program Description

Program Requirements

Volunteers must be 17 years or older at the beginning of the program. Volunteers need to have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. The volunteer should bring energy and enthusiasm to make a difference in the lives of Ghanaian children.

Volunteering with children in an orphanage is the most rewarding experience for volunteers. Volunteers work alongside the existing staff to care for the children in orphanages. The work in a children’s home involves feeding, dressing and keeping the children active within the homes. Volunteers will also be assisting local staff and caretakers in daily work to help them run the orphanage in a better way. You can also assist in the office of the orphanage if you think you can contribute to make them more organized and run in a more efficient manner. Volunteers can design teaching programs for the kids and help in improving their knowledge and understanding by teaching them in a play way method.

Volunteer tasks duties depend on the orphanage placement they work in as well as the skills of the individual volunteers.
Volunteers get to experience the local culture and the hospitality of the people of the Ghana, for which it is renowned all over the world. You can carry different volunteer supplies with you which will be helpful for the orphanage where you will be volunteering. Which ever orphanage and childcare placement you work in, you need to be ready for the challenge. As a volunteer you need to give special love, attention to the children and bring smile on their faces.

Many of the volunteers working in the Orphanage program choose to combine it with the Teaching program wherein they can work in School project in the morning and work in the orphanage in the afternoon. This is also a great way to make a larger impact in the community. Projects Location: VACI-Ghana provides orphanage work placements in Aflao. Orphanage Work Program Description

During your Free Time On the weekends, volunteers can go and visit the different places of interest in and around the city. During the weekends, you can visit tourist attractions like Wli Waterfalls, Tafi Monkey Sanctuary, Kakum Canopy Walk, Togo.

Volunteers also take a trip to Cape Coast to relax in the beautiful beaches and see the famous Cape Coast castle.

Volunteers are placed in urban and rural communities in and around the project locations where they can teach any of the arts disciplines – theatre, music, dance, visual arts, or film – to the local youth. The knowledge, skills and ideas that volunteers from other cultures can bring to a Ghanaian student is invaluable for the students.

Although English is the official language of Ghana, the students rarely get to learn from non-Ghanaian speakers of the language. There is an aspect of English-as-a-second-language instruction to all teaching through VACI-Ghana. Arts teachers will need to be prepared and able to integrate this aspect into their lessons. The need for improvisation & creativity in teaching methods is paramount and can challenge the most experienced teacher, but the rewards are amazing. The students are very eager to express themselves and respond to arts instruction with a high level of enthusiasm. Most of the schools do not have any regular arts instruction as part of their curriculum.

Volunteers work for around 5 hrs a day for 5 days a week. Volunteers are strongly encouraged to bring along teaching aids, such as musical instruments, plays, art books, artist materials, visual aids, songs, recordings, etc, to assist them in their teaching. As artistic programs are often not a part of regular curriculums in many Ghanaian schools, these teaching aids will be of vital assistance to your teaching program, but will also be a source of excitement for your students.
